Although not many ancient fortifications or palaces survive to this date,
Iraq has some fascinating castles and palaces today.
In Samarra, about 120 km from Baghdad, the Abbasid Palace is located, which is one of the finest piece
of Islamic palace alive.
The Turkmen Citadel of Kirkuk is also an impressive
fortification. Unfortunately, due to the current conflict, Iraqi fortifications are not easy
to visit and getting updated data about their condition is hard.
