The castles in Ghana were the first European fortifications of Sub-Saharan
Africa, and they have passed hands many times.
Although castles in Ghana were built originally for defensive purposes,
today they stand as a living testimony of the slave trade.

centuries. Today, both of these castles were turned into museums and guided tours are
available when visiting them.
