Bavaria is Germany’s largest state by area, and it is also the place you’ll
find the most enchanting German castles. There are plenty of castles and palaces in Bavaria,
but undoubtedly the most visited one is the dream palace of Mad Ludwig II, the Neuschwanstein Castle.
Besides Neuschwanstein, you can find in Bavaria other castles that Ludwig II
commissioned. For example the only castle that was finished during his lifetime, the
Linderhof Castle. But you can also explore the Herrenchiemsee royal palace complex,
where Ludwig was born or the Hohenschwangau Castle, built by his father Maximilian II,
where the Mad King spent much of his youth.
Although, when it comes to Bavarian castles, people associate them with Mad
Ludwig, there are many other beautiful castles in Bavaria. The old Marienberg Fortress for
example in Wurzburg is a beautiful example of a fortification with a baroque palace inside
