Baltersan Castle

Baltersan Castle is situated near Maybole.

Short History

According to an inscription (now illegible) on the entrance lintel, it was built in 1584 for John Kennedy of Pennyglen and Margaret Cathcart, his spouse.

A closer inspection of the building and historic records, suggest differently though. Instead of being the main house of a small estate, Baltersan may have been built as the residence of Quintin Kennedy, Abbot of Crossraguel from 1548 to 1564.

On Timothy Pont's map of North Carrick, published in Amsterdam in 1654 by Johannes Blaeu, Baltersan is shown clearly fenced and well planted with trees.

Pont would have seen the tower around 1588-90 when, if John Kennedy of Pennyglen is to be believed, the house would only have been inhabited for less than 10 years.

The Castle Today

Currently, the Baltersan Castle is put up for sale and is in need of restoration.
